Ren has been to this harbor before. You haven’t.

She’s calm, observant and a little dry. She knows the innkeeper, the fastest way to the quay and which tea is too sweet. She isn’t your teacher, and she isn’t keeping score.

Ren is an original character. Her voice and replies are generated by AI, and she can make mistakes.

Three chapters. Nine scenes.

  1. Chapter 1: Afterlight Harbor
A lost booking · a night market · the last ferry
    Polite requests, comparing, making plans
  2. Chapter 2: The Lighthouse Keeper
A cliff path · a missing lens · a lamp to light before dark
Directions, describing people, agreeing on times
  3. Chapter 3: The Lantern Festival
Strangers at a long table · a story by the fire · one last lantern
Small talk, telling a story, disagreeing politely
  4. Chapter 4: Being written

Each scene takes 1, 3 or 5 minutes. You choose.

One evening, one scene.

  1. Choose your approach

The quiet room above the courtyard, or the last room with a view? Pick a plan. You can change your mind when you speak.

  2. Talk it through

Speak out loud with Ren and the innkeeper. Captions show every line. Hints give you a start when you need one.

  3. See what you changed

The recap opens with your own words and what they changed in the story.

  4. Keep one line

Save a line you want to use again. It comes back in later scenes.

The Lantern Inn

InnkeeperI’m sorry, I don’t see your name anywhere.

YouI booked a room, but… maybe it was under my friend’s name?

RenAsk if there’s anything left. You’d be surprised.

YouIs there another room? Maybe one facing the water?

Because you said…

“Is there another room? Maybe one facing the water?”

The innkeeper found the last harbor room. The lamp is broken, but the view is yours.

One thing to try
“Is there another room, maybe one facing the water?” One sentence sounds smoother.

Your turn

Need a moment? Ren waits.

Tap the light during your turn and the scene holds. No timer runs and nothing is sent. When you’re ready, say so, and the story picks up where you left it.

Hints and captions are always there, and after a scene you can say a line again, better, in 90 seconds.

A line becomes yours when you say it first.

Keep a line from any recap. It comes back the next evening, then a few days later, then a week later. When you say it before Ren does, it’s yours.

Would it be possible to…?

  1. Tonight You keep it
  2. Tomorrow It comes back
  3. In 3 days Again, in a new scene
  4. In a week You say it first Yours

Questions

Is Ren a real person?

No. Ren is an original character. Her voice and replies are generated by AI, and she can make mistakes.

What level of English do I need?

If you can follow a simple conversation but find it hard to answer, Afterlight is for you. It isn’t for complete beginners.

Do I need headphones?

They help, but you can play through the speaker. A quiet room works best.

Where does my voice go?

During a scene, your voice is sent to an AI service so Ren can reply. Your transcripts, lines and journal stay on your phone. Read the privacy policy

Is the app in my language?
