Afterlight privacy
Last updated October 24, 2026. Afterlight is made by Fluxa Ventures.
What happens to your voice
Ren is an AI character. Before anything is sent, the app asks you to agree to the steps below.
While you talk with Ren, your microphone audio is streamed to Google's Gemini service so Ren can understand you and answer. Afterlight does not record or store your voice, on your phone or on our server. Audio is sent only during a conversation, never in the background.
What stays on your phone
Your conversations (as text transcripts), feedback, journal, saved lines and words, and your profile (name, level, support language) are stored only on your phone. You can delete any conversation from its recap. Deleting the app removes all of it.
What we send to create feedback and practice
To give feedback, look up a word, write a quiz or let Ren say a line, the app sends the text needed (for example a transcript, or the word and its sentence) to our server, which asks Google's Gemini service and returns the answer. Your name, level and support language are included in Ren's instructions so she can talk to you. Our server does not store this text.
What our server keeps
- An anonymous key for this installation, created by Apple's App Attest, so only the genuine app can use Ren. It is not linked to your name, email or Apple ID.
- Daily counts of requests per installation, to keep the service fair and affordable.
- Anonymous daily usage counts, such as "one scene finished" or "one word saved", to learn whether Afterlight helps people speak. They never include what you said. You can turn them off in your profile.
- If you are in a research study and enter a study code, that code, so researchers can match counts to your participation.
- If you subscribe to Afterlight Plus, the app sends the subscription's signed App Store transaction with each call. Our server checks it with Apple and keeps its original transaction ID and the minutes you've used, so your allowance works on all your devices. Apple handles the payment; we never see your name, Apple ID or payment details.
The website waitlist
If you join the waitlist on our website, we keep your email address, the language of the page and the campaign link that brought you (if any). We use it to send one email when Afterlight is on the App Store, then delete the list. We don't share it. Ask us to remove your address at any time.
Google Gemini
Voice, text and responses are processed by Google under the Gemini API terms. See Google's Gemini API terms and privacy policy.
Things we don't do
No accounts, no advertising, no tracking across apps or websites, no selling of data. Afterlight is for adults and isn't directed at children.
